70Yr Freedom Charter Tribute

The day began with participants arriving at the Gauteng Legislature, where they were welcomed with refreshments and an atmosphere of anticipation. By 9:15 AM, the opening plenary commenced, setting the tone for a day of reflection and dialogue on the enduring significance of the Freedom Charter.

Programme Director, Cde Lisa Seftel (Veterans’ League NEC member), warmly welcomed attendees before introducing a powerful video extract titled

Isithwalandwe: The Story of the South African Freedom Charter.

This visual journey through history reminded everyone of the Charter’s foundational role in the struggle for liberation.

Following the screening, two key addresses underscored the continued relevance of the Freedom Charter in today’s South Africa. Cde Snuki Zikalala, President of the ANC Veterans’ League, and Cde Thlologelo Collen Malatji, President of the ANC Youth League, shared their perspectives on how the Charter’s principles remain vital in guiding the nation toward equality, justice, and shared prosperity.

Comrade Joy Copelan gave a reflective oration when she attended the Congress of the People conference.

At 10:25 AM, participants broke into nine smaller groups, each focusing on a specific clause of the Freedom Charter, such as “The people shall govern” or “The land shall be shared among those who work it.” Facilitators guided the first dialogue session, where attendees introduced themselves and discussed why their chosen clause resonated with them personally. Lively exchanges highlighted the intergenerational connections between veterans and youth, bridging past struggles with present-day challenges.

After a networking lunch at 12:30 PM, the second dialogue session deepened the conversation.

Participants explored actionable steps to implement the Freedom Charter’s ideals within the framework of South Africa’s Constitution. Discussions also addressed existing obstacles—such as economic inequality and institutional barriers—and proposed strategies to overcome them.

The day concluded with a closing plenary at 3:30 PM, where representatives from four youth organizations shared key takeaways from the discussions. Their reflections emphasized unity, collective action, and the need to uphold the Charter’s vision in contemporary governance and social movements.

Finally, Cde Ilva Mackay-Langa, Secretary General of the ANC Veterans’ League, delivered closing remarks, reinforcing the importance of intergenerational solidarity in realizing the Freedom Charter’s promises.

The event ended on a hopeful note, with participants leaving inspired to carry forward its legacy in their communities and the broader struggle for justice.
